How does solar energy works

From the moment that the earth was formed, it is the solar energy, and since the 7th century BC, when glass is used to magnify its potential, human beings have tried to capture it. Today, the technology takes more to generate electricity, heating, lighting, etc … but the point is the same, using the sun to our advantage.

What is solar power?

In a nutshell, solar energy is the light and heat reaching us from the sun. Viewed from a literal point of view, is the energy from the sun reaching the earth and helps us that life continues. But what interests us is how we can exploit to our benefit.

How does solar energy?

Outside the warm water ocean currents to create and help plants to perform photosynthesis, solar energy needs the help of people to benefit in other ways. This support can take many forms, from architecture and urban planning, to use techniques to maximize light and heat for the benefit of the buildings to solar energy, how to use solar energy more widely used and developed by technology, including solar cookers, water purification and distillation, solar heaters and much more.

Although solar energy is the most used and developed, solar photovoltaic cells, are the most discussed and debated, as they help us to generate electricity from clean and renewable. Basically, photovoltaic cells make photons from sunlight into electrons change state’s largest energy producing electricity. Photovoltaic solar energy production has doubled every two years, growing at a rate of 48% on average since 2002, making energy technology’s fastest growing.

Another major use is being given to solar energy, solar is the concentration. This technology uses mirrors and tracking systems (heliostats) to focus a great deal of sunlight into a small area, which contains the liquid evaporated by the heat produced by the sun, generating steam that drives turbines and generates electricity.

There are more ways to harness solar energy, but for now, these three are the most popular, used and workable.

Advantages of solar energy

The biggest advantage of solar energy is that there is a lot. The total solar energy available on earth is 3850 ZJ (zetajoules) per year, while in 2007 only ZJ 0471 were used. But there is definitely more of the available solar energy we need. Another major benefit of solar energy is that it is very versatile, as already mentioned above can be used to heat, light, clean and much more. As the sun is alive, we will have solar energy in the world to capture and harness it to our benefit.

Disadvantages of solar energy

The current disadvantages of solar energy can be summarized in virtually one, the cost, at least for energy. It takes a lot of land and money to make it worthwhile. Pollution and climate may affect their effectiveness, so that the costs rise even more.

And while solar energy can operate medium and large-scale, small-scale functionality is very limited, because the sun is not always available. Use batteries to store energy and use it when not available (at night), reduces its efficiency greatly.

Solar energy is a topic discussed today. It seems like every week we build the largest solar farm in the world and that the efficiency grows on a monthly basis.
